PRP Therapy for Hair Loss: All You Need to Know
Hair loss is an issue for both men and women, and the causes are both genetic and environmental. As we age, our bodies lose their ability to repair cells. It causes the hair follicles to shrink and slow down their production of cells.
Loss of hair is a common problem that can negatively impact a person's confidence, especially if the loss is widespread or affects the scalp.
So now the question is, how to treat this hair loss without any surgical process, as people nowadays look for non-surgical and non-scarring treatment.
PRP or platelet-rich plasma therapy is a new alternative for hair regeneration. It is a highly concentrated blood process that can repair and restore damaged areas of the body. PRP has been used to treat numerous conditions, and the procedure is most commonly used in the treatment of hair loss and skin rejuvenation.
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is the most innovative way to stimulate hair growth to regain what was lost. PRP is specifically formulated with your own blood that has platelets (a component of blood). PRP is designed to trigger the body's natural healing process by encouraging your body to regenerate new hair.

Platelet Rich Plasma Injections For Hair Loss
Plasma enriched with platelets (PRP) contains approximately 3 to 5 times the number of platelets found in normal circulating blood. During a PRP treatment, a small amount of the patient's blood is withdrawn, treated to extract the platelets, and then injected into areas of hair loss.
Procedure for PRP Therapy
-Blood is drawn - usually from the arm - and spun rapidly in a centrifuge (a machine that separates fluids of different densities).
-You will have three layers of blood after about ten minutes in the centrifuge:
- Platelet-poor plasma
- Platelet-rich plasma
- Red blood cells
When the platelet-rich plasma has been drawn up into a syringe, it is injected into scalp areas that need more hair growth.
Two options are available for injecting platelet-rich plasma back into the scalp:
- Subdermal: PRP is injected into the scalp underneath the fat layer using a long needle with a smaller number of injections; or,
- Dermal: PRP is injected into the scalp dermis using a shorter needle and more injections.
Why PRP is Effective for Hair Loss Treatment
Platelet-rich plasma contains approximately five times the number of platelets as regular blood. The platelets have:
- Transforming growth factor
- Vascular endothelial growth factor
- Platelet-derived growth factor
- Insulin-like growth factor 1
- Keratinocyte growth factor
Is PRP hair treatment a permanent solution?
It takes a few treatments to see initial results.
After the results appear, you will need touch-ups about once a year to maintain new hair growth.
